Agent for coloring keratinous fibers contains (A) dehydroascorbic acid and (B) compound(s) selected from amines, N-heterocyclic compounds, aminoacids, oligopeptides and aromatic hydroxyl compounds, and/or methine (CH)-active compounds. Agent for coloring keratinous fibers contains (A) dehydroascorbic acid of formula (I) and (B) compound(s) containing primary or secondary amino groups or hydroxyl (OH) groups, selected from primary or secondary aliphatic or aromatic amines, N-heterocyclic compounds, alpha - to w-aminoacids, oligopeptides or 2-9 aminoacids and aromatic OH compounds, and/or Methine (CH)-active compounds. An Independent claim is also included for a method of coloring using this type of composition.
