Chiral compound used as polymerizable, high-twisting-power dopant for the production of cholesteric networks

The compound is based on chiral tetrahydrofuran or hexahydrofuro(3,2-b)furan substituted by at least two mesogenic groups. A compound of formula (Z-Y-(A)m-Y-M-Y)n-X (I) is new. A = spacer; M = mesogenic group containing two phenylene radicals which are optionally substituted by 1-4C alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, 1-20C alkoxycarbonyl, 1-20C alkylcarbonyl and are linked via O, CO, OCO, OCOO or COO; Y = a direct bond, O, S, COO, OCO, OCOO, CON(R) or N(R)CO; Z = a polymerizable group; m = 0 or 1; n = 2-6; X = a chiral radical from those of formulae (a)-(e); and R = 1-4C alkyl or H. Independent claims are also included for: (A) a liquid crystalline mixture comprising at least one compound as above; and (B) a solid composition comprising a compound as above in copolymerized form.
