At least one support rod (4) is guided in an inner sleeve (7) which is rotatably mounted in an outer sleeve (6) fixed to the seat back. By rotating the inner sleeve in the outer sleeve both height adjustment of the headrest and retention of the adjusted height position is achieved. When the inner sleeve is rotated into one position a locking arrangement between the support rod and outer sleeve is released, and in another position the locking between the support rod and headrest retraction mechanism (26,27) is established with simultaneous release of the locking between the support rod and outer sleeve.
