The automatic redialling mechanism is integrated with a local telephone terminal (31-35). The local terminal can carry out two way communication with a distant terminal. The automatic redialling mechanism (44-46) is actioned when there is a loss of communication with a distant terminal, automatically attempting to re-establish the call until the line is reconnected or a set number of attempts have been made.
