The toaster has positions for slices of small and large loaves. The toaster (1) has a bread slice carrier which can be moved between a first bread discharge position with means for damping the arrival of the carrier into its first position; a reset device (17), for the carrier, mounted between the chassis (3) and an extension (6) of the carrier; and control means (9) associated with a moving stop in the chassis of the toaster and which can stop the movement of the release of the carrier from a second intermediate position. The second intermediate position is a second discharge position for a usual bread size, the first discharge position is for a smaller bread size. The stop, or the part of the carrier interacting with the stop, includes a second means for damping the arrival of the bread slice into its second position.
