A composite hollow propeller shafting for ships comprises a load bearing laminate, especially of fibre-reinforced epoxy resin. A fire-resistant casing is fixed directly to the laminate. A cooling device is provided over the length of the shaft, especially a water sprinkler unit. Preferably, the protective casing is a phenolic resin prepreg containing glass fibre fabric. It may be formed by an epoxy resin prepreg, the resin modified for fire resistance, with a glass or ceramic fibre. The protective casing is an impregnated spacing fabric with closed outer surface. |
