The tool comprises two frames (1) each of which carries a row of cylinders (2) which are mutually staggered. The frames (1) are arranged as the arms of a vice with a stop (4) which is adjustable according to application. On closing the frames the intensity in a contained optical fibre (3) is reduced and the tool may be used to find faults employing Fresnel peaks and to carry out operations such as optical soldering
