PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a normally white supertwisted nematic liquid crystal display which is improved in the stability of the chromaticity in a black state. SOLUTION: The display 200 includes a supertwisted nematic liquid crystal cell 215 having first and second substrates 225, 240 between a polarizer layer 205 and an analyzer layer 210 and a liquid crystal layer 220 arranged between the first and second substrates. The display further includes at least one A plate compensation layer 250 of positive double refraction arranged between the polarizer layer and the supertwisted nematic liquid crystal and at least one A plate compensation layer 255 of positive double refraction arranged between the analyzer layer and the supertwisted nematic liquid crystal cell. These layers lessen the chromaticity shift of the display over various temps. at a wide observation angle.
