PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine optically active diols such as R- and S-propylene glycols in a sample in a split state by analyzing a sample of a beverage or the like by gas chromatography using an optically active splitting capillary column. SOLUTION: For example, propylene glycol in beer or the like is extracted by a solid phase extraction method and optically split by gas chromatography held under an optically active condition. As a column for gas chromatography for optically active splitting, for example, a capillary column coated with an optically active phase wherein a cyclodextrin derivative is bonded to a silica derivative is used. Since R- and S-propylene glycols are respectively determined, it can be judged whether propylene glycol is caused by the mixing with a cooling medium or a microorganism. Respective isomers of 2,3-butane diol can be also perfectly separated and this method can be pref. adapted to a compd. represented by the general formula X-CH(OH)CH(OH)-Y (wherein X and Y are a 5C or less alkyl group). |
