PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magneto-resistive(MR) MR head of high output which suppresses Barkhausen noise and has excellent corrosion resistance by using a Cr-Al alloy in forming the antiferromagnetic layer of the MR head having five layers; the antiferromagnetic layer, first magnetic layer, nonmagnetic layer, second magnetic layer and magneto-resistance effect layer, magnetic domain limiting films formed in contact with both ends of these five layers and electrode films formed thereon. SOLUTION: The Cr-Al alloy forming the antiferromagnetic layer consists of 60 to 80% atomic fraction of Cr and the film thickness thereof is specified to 20 to 100 nm. In the case of a preferable constitution example, the spectacle resistance of the antiferromagnetic layer 1 is 1300μΩ.cm. The specific resistance of the four layers of the spin valve films consisting of the first magnetic layer 2, the nonmagnetic layer 3, the second magnetic layer 4 and the magneto- resistance effect layer 5 is 3μΩ.cm. As a result, the currents flowing in the four layers of the spin valve films increases and consequently, the output of the MR head increases. The MR head having the excellent corrosion resistance is thus obtd.
