LOCK FOR PREVENTING MOVEMENT OF A ROD

A rod lock 76 is disclosed for preventing axial movement of a rod 72 in a first direction, while permitting axial movement of the rod 72 in the opposite directi on. The rod lock 76 includes a pair of opposed, generally wedge-shaped jaws 210 disposed on either side of the rod 72. The jaws 210 are movable by a spring load toward a pair of fixed wedges 216. The jaws 210 are in sliding contact with the fixed wedges 216 so that when the spring load forces the jaws 210 toward the fixed wedges 216, the jaws 210 are forced inward into a gripping engagement with the r od 72. In this position, the gripping engagement of the jaws 210 prevents axial movement of the rod 72 toward the fixed wedges while axial movement of the rod i n the opposite direction is possible by overcoming the spring load.
