the transmission of a validation code back to the user enables secure identification of the user prior to a transaction. The identification and authentication system comprises an electronic unit with an interface (1,3) for the introduction of identification and/or authentication data. Circuits (5,6,7) are provided to generate a variable code in response to the identification of the user. Further circuits (9,10) transmit this code to the user via a data transmission network. Messages from the user can then be authenticated by use of this system. The transmission system includes an assembly of selectively addressable personal receivers (10), each dedicated to a user of the system. These are arranged to receive the variable code and respond to the system.
