Disclosed herein is a method for identifying unknown microorganisms contained in a given sample by obtaining their spectral signatures by FTIR spectroscopy and comparing those spectral signatures with the spectral signatures of known microorganisms, the method comprising the steps of a) obtaining a sample of said unknown microorganism grown on the universal growth medium; b); smearing said sample on a sample holder; c) placing said sampling holder in the IR beam of a FTIR spectrometer; d) obtaining a spectrograph of said unknown sample; e) sequentially comparing said spectral signature with a database of spectral signatures of known microorganisms so as to establish a most probable match by different algorithms, thereby identifying said unknown microorganism. The method further discloses various techniques for ensuring the safety of those handling the dangerous samples.
