The strut has a bypass (8) between the pressure chamber (5) containing the piston rod and the opposite chamber (4). At least one duct (11) extends axially of the cylinder and is selectively closed at one end by the piston (3). A first reservoir (6) is connected to one pressure chamber (5) and the second (7) with the other (4). The duct has a valve (9,10) connected to it.
