A method and system for automatically setting up a call in a radio telecommunications network (1). The system includes a first mobile switching center (MSC) (5) servicing and controlling an area where an originating MS (3) is located and a home location register (HLR) (9) associated with the first MSC. The orginating MS (3) sends data which includes the selected time and a destination number of a terminating party. Within the HLR (9) is service logic (11) which determines when the selected time has arrived and initiates the call. Upon determining that the originating MS (3) is idle and available, the HLR (9) establishes a voice channel between the first MSC (5) and the originating MS. Additionally, the HLR establishes a voice channel (54) between the terminating party (17) and a second MSC (13) if the terminating party is a mobile station. The invention also includes means (7) to record a message for delivery at the selected time to the originating party. Additionally, the terminating party may be a telephone in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
