An overhead wire having a spiral groove so formed, as to satisfy the relation 1<W/h<16 where W and h respectively represent the width and depth of the groove, in the outermost layer formed by intertwisting a plurality of segment strands. The segment strands include thin segment strands and thick segment strands. A spiral ridge is so formed that the level difference (H) between the outer peripheral surface of the thin segment strands and that of the thick segment strands, the outside diameter (D) of the overhead wire defined by the thin segment strands, and the central angle ( theta ) of the thick segment strands satisfy the relations 0.01(<)H/D<0.1 and 10 DEG < theta <90 DEG . Recesses are provided on one of the sides of each segment strand and projections are provided on the other. The strands are intertwisted by engaging the recesses and projections to form engaging sections. The length of the contact between the recesses and projections of each engaging section is 10 % or less of the length of each engaging section. Thus, the wind resistance, wind noise, etc., of the overhead wire are reduced and the protrusion, lifting, etc., of the intertwisted strands can be prevented.
