The method involves comparing a quantization factor (QSC), which represents the dimension of a variable amplitude quantisation, with a first threshold (SW1) in a digital comparator. The exceeding or the dimension of exceeding of the threshold is signalled as the criterion for a reduced picture quality. Preferably, an identification (QST) is provided which indicates if a linear or a non-linear quantisation is carried out. The variable quantization factor is transcoded with a characteristic curve allocated to the identification before the comparison with the first threshold.
