Electrochemical sensor operation comprises monitoring the cell constant of the sensor by means of the measurement voltage at the measuring electrode of the sensor. In the operation of an electrochemical sensor (2) by applying an input alternating voltage (UZ) of frequency (w) to a counter-electrode (C) and processing the measurement voltage (UL) occurring at a measuring electrode (S), the cell constant of the sensor (2) is monitored by means of the measurement voltage (UL). An Independent claim is also included for an electrical circuit for the above electrochemical sensor (2), including an alternating voltage source (11) coupled to the counter-electrode (C) and a signal processor (12) is connected to the measuring electrode (S), the novelty being that the alternating voltage source (11) and the signal processor (12) are coupled together.
