A structure-borne signal from an internal combustion engine is used to calculate energy conversion during a combustion process according to a theoretical model and to derive the supplied amount of fuel therefrom. If the calculated amount of fuel deviates from the specified amount of fuel, a malfunction of the injection system is detected.
