<p>A latching apparatus controls the motion of a first member (10) relative to a second member (12). The first member (10) is reciprocally movable relative to the second member (12) in forward and reverse directions along the line of motion. The second member (12) carries a latch (14) which is movable within a plane parallel to the line of motion. The latch (14) has a first pawl (50) and a second pawl (52). The second member (12) carries a pivot (40) for carrying the latch (14) so that the latch is rotatable relative to the second member (12) about the pivot (40) which is orthogonal to the line of motion. The latch is shiftable between first and second positions relative to the pivot. The first member (10) bears a plurality of engagement features (24) linearly arrayed along the line of motion. Each engagement feature (24) has a generally forward facing first face (25) and a generally rearward facing second face (26). When the latch is in the first position, it is biased for its first pawl to engage the engagement features. When the latch is in the second position it is biased for its second pawl to engage the engagement features.</p> |
