Tuned silent discharge treatment destroying pollutants in flue- and exhaust gases

The gases are passed through only a single dielectrically-limited discharge, over a large surface area. Gas already treated, is prevented from flowing through further discharges. An Independent claim is included for the equipment. The chamber (1) contains electrodes (4, 6), at least one being a perforated (7) electrode (6), with the gas entering (2) or leaving (3) past it. Preferred features: In the new method, all gas particles flowing into the discharge chamber are subjected at least once to a discharge pulse, during two consecutive half cycles. Frequency and/or mark space ratio of the voltage is coordinated with flow velocity. Through one electrode, air (e.g.) is added to the discharge chamber, to control the flow velocity through parallel circuits of individual discharge units. This air flows through no other discharge chamber or region, either before or after addition. In the new equipment, one electrode is a dielectrically-surrounded (5) rod electrode (4), past which the gas flows. An insulated electrode is surrounded by openings through which the gas can flow. The gas flow passes through insulating plates. The electrodes are catalytically-coated.
