<p>A collet (30) is formed to grip a workpiece (48) with a uniformly distributed gripping force. Collet (30) includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart radial slots (42) extending partly through collet (30) and at least one opening (40) extending radially all the way through collet (30) and lying between end surfaces (41) of collet (30). Shim slots (186) are formed in end surfaces (41) and a shim (184) is mounted in two shim slots (186) to extend across opening (40) to block debris from moving therethrough. Coil springs (360) bias collet segments (331) to engage actuator member (50) of a machine-tool chuck. Methods of making collet (30) are also disclosed.</p> |
