An electronic lock for a locking system (1) has an electronic key (2), especially an electronic ignition key for a car to operate the relevant operational aggregates (13) like engine control, immobilizer, etc. The key exchanges with the lock at least one coded optical operational signal (9). In the lock is present a linear optical transmission path (26) to pass on the optical operational signal. The key is assigned to the first end (27) of the path. In the lock, devices assigned to the second end (28) of the path are located for the processing the optical signal, like electro-optical converter elements (25). The devices for this processing are located at a distance from the transmission path. At the second end of the path is found an optical deflection element (30) so that a direction change takes place of the signal between the path from and to the devices.
