An anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal display comprising a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature of a liquid crystal panel (10), a heater (102) for heating the liquid crystal panel (10), and a heater control circuit (17) for controlling the temperature of the liquid crystal panel (10), wherein the temperature of the liquid crystal panel (10) on display is kept at a level at which the interlayer distance of a smectic layer of anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material clamped in the liquid crystal panel (10) is the shortest. A voltage waveform for controlling the layer structure is applied to the liquid crystal panel (10) of the ferroelectric liquid crystal display when the temperature of the liquid crystal panel (10) reaches a level at which the interlayer distance of the smectic layer of anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal material becomes the shortest after power is turned on.
