Negative active material for a lithium ion battery

A negative active material for a lithium ion battery comprises 50-95 wt.% graphitic carbon fibers and 5-50 wt.% graphitic carbon particles. Independent claims are also included for (i) a lithium ion battery negative electrode comprising a current collector, a binder and the above negative active material; and (ii) a lithium ion battery produced using the above negative active material. Preferred Features: The graphitic carbon fibers are of radial type and have a diameter of 5-30 mu and an aspect ratio of 3-100. The graphitic particles have a diameter of 3-10 mu and a resistivity of 1/*10<-3> to 5/*10<-3> OMICRON -cm.
