A method of producing a large embroidered pattern, using at least two part-patterns in a combined design using a sewing or embroidery machine with a moving embroidery frame, the two part-patterns (T1) to be next to each other each have a common attachment point (A) outside the combined pattern (K). The attachment point is the final stitch in the embroidery of the first part-pattern. Thereafter, each section of the fabric workpiece to be embroidered with a part-pattern is positioned with the attachment point under the needle, and the first stitch of the next part-pattern is the attachment point. When the combination pattern is finished, the linking threads (V) to the attachment point are removed. Also claimed is an apparatus for producing the large pattern and a method of operating this apparatus.
