Method for thermomechanical processing of ingot metallurgy near gamma titanium aluminides to refine grain size and optimize mechanical properties

A method for thermomechanically processing near-~c Ti aluminide alloy wrought prods. comprises: (a) coating a near-~c Ti aluminide alloy ingot; (b) hot isostatic pressing (HIP'ing) (a) to seal off casting defects; (c) preparing the HIP'ed ingot into suitable forging preforms; (d) isothermally forging the forging preforms into end product preforms at forging temp. close to a phase line between ~a+~c and ~a-2+~c phase fields to break down the coarse ingot microstructure and to yield a largely equi-mixed ~c microstructure; and, (e) processing the end product preforms into desired wrought end products.
