A method and computer system for building packet filters. In the present invention, a graphical user interface is generated. The graphical user interface is adapted to assist a user in the construction of a packet filter such that the us er is able to build a packet filter without being extensively trained in all of the numerous parameters involved in packet filter construction. In the present embodiment, the present invention receives expression-based statements from the user. The expression-based statements indicate the characteristics of the packet filter which the user wishes to build. The present embodiment then converts the expression-based statements to a language which is suitable for the formation of the packet filter. Finally, in the present embodiment, the packet filter builder invention creates the packet filter desired by the user. In so do ing, the present invention provides for the building of complex packet filters withou t requiring that the user be well-versed in complex and error prone programming languages. Additionally, the present invention does not require that the user be extensively trained in or cognizant of all of the various parameters in packet f ilter construction.
