PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high catalytic activity and control both fouling and the formation of polymer blocks by bringing an ionic compound having a specified structure into contact with a porous carrier. SOLUTION: An ionic compound of the formula [wherein M<1> is B or Al; R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are each a 1-20C (halogenated) hydrocarbon group, alkoxy, phenoxy or halogeno; R<4> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group which may contain a heteroatom; L is silyl, hydroxyl, carboxyl or amino; a, b and c are each 0 to 3, and d is 1 to 4, provided that a+b+c+d=4; and K is a monovalent cation] in an amount of 0.0001-1,000,000 pts.wt. is brought into contact with a particulate carrier having a mean pore diameter of 8.0-23.0 nm, preferably 9.5-16.0 nm, a specific surface of 1-2,000 m<2> /g, preferably 50-1,500 m<2> /g, a pore volume of 0.1-3.0 ml/g, preferably 0.5-2.5 ml/g, and a mean particle diameter of 0.1-2,000μm, preferably 1-1,000μm, in an amount of 100 pts.wt. at -80 to 300 deg.C, preferably -50 to 200 deg.C, in the presence of an organic solvent.
