Novel lignin derivative, moldings produced by using the derivative, and process for the preparation thereof

A process for the preparation of a novel lignin derivative, characterized by subjecting a lignophenol derivative having diphenylpropane units prepared by bonding the carbon atom of a phenol derivative ortho to the phenolic hydroxyl group to the benzylic carbon atoms of the phenylpropane basic units of lignin to treatment with an alkali capable of dissociating the above hydroxyl group to thereby bond the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group to the beta -position carbon atom, thus forming an arylcoumaran derivative having arylcoumaran units constituted of the aromatic nuclei of lignin and coumaran skeletons bonded thereto.
