The apparatus for determining the position and orientation of an item of diagnostic/therapeutic equipment e.g. a microscope (1) having an articulated mounting (3) comprises an arm (5) rigidly attached to the microscope on which discs (15,17) carry LED sources (19,21,23 ; 25,27,29) respectively. Light rays from these sources aligned w.r.t. the arm axis (35) and microscope axis (33) are used with a separate line camera array to identify microscope focus.
