Shaft-sealing ring

The seal has a sheet-metal stiffening ring (1) with a radial flange (2) to which a sealing lip is vulcanised, and an axial flange. One part (3) of the axial flange is of an intermediate diameter, and the other end part (4) of maximum diameter, so as to form a press-fit in a housing or hub. The outside surfaces of the first part of the axial flange and the radial flange (5) are coated with rubber (9), with a maximum external diameter at least equal to that of the end part of the axial flange. In the axial flange, the fibres under tension are always on the outside when seen in the radial direction, whereas those under compression are always on the inside. At one point on part of the axial flange the rubber coating is of smaller diameter than the maximum-diameter section, so as to form a recess (22). Thus, by pressing the seal into position in the housing, the rubber of the coating is displaced into the recess.
