Regenerator for cleaning and recovering heat from ceramic kiln flue gases

The regenerator which is located above the tunnel and can be within the kiln cladding (5), has two straight sections (2a,2b) parallel with the tunnel and linked by a U-bend (7), and has inlets (3) from the hot section and (6) from the preheat section of the kiln. The regenerator draws gases from the preheating and firing sections of the kiln. Gas flow in the kiln is pulsed or periodically reversed. The regenerator has e.g. ceramic or stainless steel wool packing (12) which provides a large surface area. An extractor (9) draws gas from the regenerator to a stack (10). A four-way valve (8) enables the flow direction to be reversed. A return system (13,14,15) enables hot gas to be returned from the regenerator to the kiln.
