A chamber (11) is shut off from ambient pressure and subjected to defined depression. A reception volume (13) connects via a valve (12) to the chamber. On opening the valve, fluid (16) is pulled in through the lower opening (15), until pressures equalize. A vent valve (17) then introduces ambient pressure (at least), to drive fluid from the reception volume. An Independent claim is included for a multi-pipette based on the unit construction and principles described. Preferred features: The vent valve is connected to a source of pressure and/or vacuum (18), to drive the fluid out under pressure and/or to restore the reduced pressure in the chamber. Dimensions and pressures are selected such that fluid goes no further than its reception volume, which is formed in a replaceable component, especially a capillary tube (14). For each chamber there is a reception volume.
