METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SLITTING A SHEET MATERIAL WEB

An apparatus and a method for slitting a sheet material web (100) as it is wound onto a roll (20) including at least one winding drum (21, 22) supporting the web, a moveable reel spool (24) positioned in a parallel and spaced apart relationship with the winding drum, a slitting device and a control system. The slitting device includes a track member (112) and a slitting member (120) moveably mounted on the track member. The slitting member (120) continuously slits the sheet material web (100) longitudinally along its length as it is wound onto the roll (20). The control system controls the position of the slitting member (120) on the track (112) so as to maintain a predetermined penetration of the slitting member within the roll (20) as the roll increases in size.
