The process involves producing an osmotic pressure against a membrane, thus separating the very salty water from water with a low salt concentration. The osmotic pressure is used for the generation of power in an assembly which has a pump (1) delivering the salt water, coupled by a shaft (4) to a motor from which it is separated by a membrane tank (2) with a low (5) and high (6) pressure sections separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The high pressure section (6) is linked to the pump (1) and motor (3). The low-pressure (5) section has a fresh water inlet (11). The low (5) and high (6) pressure zones are separated by a bundle of tubes (7) whose walls form the semi-permeable membrane. The fresh water flows into the pipe inner passages. A generator (12) is fitted to the shaft (4). Given a motor stroke volume 180 liters, and a stroke volume ratio pump/motor of 0.9, the arrangement would produce an energy efficiency of 0.5. The arrangement would generated 1500 kJ from one cubic meter of fresh water, by moving 9 cubic meters of salt water.
