Systems and methods employing the invention disclosed herein obtain information in real time relating to a television signal present in a TV set non -invasively of the TV set, from which the source of the TV content displayed by the TV set c an be identified. The information may be used for other purposes, which may or may not require real time reproduction, including to determine the channel to which the TV set was tuned and/ or to identify the input to the TV set which supplied the televis ion signal. Content source may be determined from a code extracted from the reproduc ed television signal, or in other ways. Disclosed also are improved methods and app aratus for reproducing a television signal, for determining whether one television sign al matches another television signal and for determining when a television receiver has completed a channel change. The invention has particular application for use in TV audience measurement systems.
