The material (1) is guided round the deflector with an angle of wrap. The deflector comprises at least two coaxial sub-pieces (2,3), part of whose peripheries features an outline shape, which enable the material to be drawn. Another part of the periphery of each sub-piece is smooth, without outline shaping. To effect a transverse shifting of the material (1) in relation to the deflector, one of the sub-pieces is alternatingly moved from a position in which the shaped section (9) is surrounded by the material into a position in which the smooth peripheral section is surrounded by the material.
