A compression type refrigeration system having a compressor (20), a condenser (26) and an evaporator (42A) positioned remotely from the condenser (26), a liquid feed line (31) connecting the condenser outlet (27) with the evaporator inlet (41A), said feed line (31) having a length, and an expansion device (30) located in the liquid feed line (31) and positioned remotely from the evaporator (42A). Where multiple evaporators (42A, 42B, 42C) are employed a novel distributing device (50) is employed to divide the main refrigerant stream flowing in the liquid feed line (31) between the expansion device (30) and the evaporators into sub-streams which flow to each of the multiple evaporators (42A, 42B, 42C). A hot gas defrost is provided which is designed to avoid condensation of refrigerant within the defrosting evaporator.
