A device for determining the position of a catheter probe 6 within a body cavity 4. The device consists of an array of ultrasonic transducers 6 arranged upon the head of one or more catheters 1, 2 and connected, via multichannel transceiver 10, to signal processing means 8, computer 30 and display means 32. In operation, ultrasonic waves are emitted from selected ultrasonic transducers 6, waves reflected from the cavity boundary 4 back to the transducer array are detected by the transducers 6. The acoustic signal a given transducer transmits (16, Fig. 3) is correlated with the echo signal it receives (18) and therefrom the signal processor 8 calculates a transfer function (24) for that transducer. This is done for each transducer 6. Numerical algorithms are employed to generate a three dimensional image of the body cavity by iteratively matching predicted transfer functions with the calculated transfer functions (24) for the transducers 6. The 3-D image is displayed by the image display means 32 and the transducer positions are indicated so as to aid the user in locating the catheter within the body cavity. |
