A process for the non-catalytic prodn. of tert. butyl hydroperoxide and tert. butyl alcohol from isobutane and 0 in a vertical reactor comprises: (a) sparging a mixt. of isobutane with 0 to the bottom of the reactor, (b) charging a reaction mixt. recycle stream to the reactor above the sparge pt., (c) centrally charging a downwardly flowing stream of cooled fresh isobutane to the top of the reactor to induce central of the fresh isobutane and annular upflow of the sparged mixt. and the recycle stream, (d) withdrawing a liq. prod. stream adjacent the top of the reactor, (e) withdrawing a vapour prod. stream comprising isobutane from the top of the reactor, (f) partially condensing the vapour stream; (g) recycling the condensed isobutane to the top of the reactor and (h) recovering the liq. prod. stream.
