The ignition unit (1) has two electrodes (2a,2b) separated by a cylindrical insulating tube (3) defining an internal volume (4). The electrodes are connected by a fuse wire (5) running diagonally through the internal volume to form a plasma torch. The dimensions are chosen to produce a plasma discharge when subject to a potential of 600 Volt or less and requiring less than 5000 joule of energy.
