Subscriber equipment in a television system includes an integrated receiver and decoder (IRD) 12 including a first smart card reader 32 operative to accept a first smart card 42, and a remote control 14 including a second smart card reader 58 operative to accept a second smart card 64. The first smart card and the second smart card, when inserted in the corresponding first and second smart card readers respectively, are operative to communicate with each other in wireless communication over a wireless (e.g. ir) communication link 16 to control access to services, eg family and adult TV programs (or cheap and expensive merchandise purchases) are enabled using the cards 42,64 respectively. In another embodiment, both card readers and the decoding of the TV programs are in the remote control. |
