Insoluble cross-linked copolymers of a ketone of the formula:-<FORM:0787358/IV (a)/1> in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and a cross-linking monomer containing a plurality of vinylidene groups, which contains groups of the formula: <FORM:0787358/IV (a)/2> are made by after-treating a copolymer of the ketone and cross-linking monomer, with phosphorus trichloride and acetic acid and hydrolyzing the resulting product. The radical R may be methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl, iso-butyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, benzyl, tolyl, or phenethyl. The cross-linking monomer may be divinyl benzene, toluene, naphthalene, ethylbenzene, xylene, or ether, ethylene glycol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, or diallyl maleate. The copolymer may contain units of other monomers such alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl acetate or propionate, vinyl chloride or bromide, vinylidene chloride or bromide, and diallyl phthalate. Prior to the aftertreatment the copolymer is preferably swollen with an organic liquid such as ethylene dichloride or toluene. The aftertreatment may be effected in glacial acetic acid alone, but it is preferred also to employ an organic liquid such as ethylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, or xylene. The resins are used as cation-exchangers. |
