PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain efficient data transmission. SOLUTION: When an opposite side capability corresponding to a destination telephone number based on a dial signal received from a facsimile equipment is blank, a facsimile signal is sent via a telephone line and the reception capability of a destination is acquired and added to a destination table 32. When the opposite capability is not blank, the facsimile signal is converted into an electronic mail and sent via a LAN channel. Thus, efficient data transmission is attained corresponding to the reception capability of the destination.
