PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an associative memory device which can be operated at high speed and in which power consumption is low. SOLUTION: A first CAM (associative memory) cell array 101 to which upper (m) bits of data to be retrieved is supplied is constituted by connecting CAM cells of (m) bits in series for each word, and compares stored data of (m) bits previously stored for each word with upper (m) bits of data to be retrieved by bit serial. A sense amplifier 201 detects the compared result. A second associative memory cell array 102 to which lower (n-m) bits of data to be retrieved is supplied is constituted by connecting CAM cells of (n-m) pieces in parallel for each word, becomes an operation state only when output of the first sense amplifier is shown to be coincident, and compares stored data of (n-m) bits previously stored for each word with lower (n-m) bits of data to be retrieved by bit parallel. A second sense amplifier 202 detects the compared result. |
