PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and accurately execute a mounting work of a semiconductor optical element by providing a positioning means for deciding a gradient of the element to a reference surface of a predetermined base member. SOLUTION: A ridge type optical waveguide 14 is formed on an n-type InP substrate 20 of the semiconductor optical element 10. The waveguide 14 is formed by inclining at an angleθto a normal direction of an emitting end face 13, and a light emitting direction is set to a direction having a predetermined angle to a normal direction of the end face 13. Further, positioning structures 17, 18 for deciding a gradient of the element 10 to a reference surface 12 of a sub-mount 11 of a predetermined base member are provided. And, the structures 17, 18 are constituted by marker formed of recess stripes formed on an upper surface of the element 10. The markers are formed so that an angle formed between a direction parallel to the light emitting direction, i.e., a normal direction of the end face 13 and a direction of the marker becomes a predetermined angle.
