PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the sticking of a carrier not only in its early stages of image formation but also in ordinary stage, to prevent occurrence of image defects such as white streaks and to stably form a good image free from scattering of a toner and an image fog. SOLUTION: This carrier for developing an electrostatic latent image consists of each magnetite core and a resin coating the magnetite core. The magnetite core contains FeO and Fe2 O3 as principal components and the molar ratio of FeO:Fe2 O3 is 0.15:1.0 to 0.7:1.0. The Mg content of the surface part of the carrier is 1.5-5.0 at. number %.
