A process for the production of 7-18C alcohols (I) by hydroformylation of corresponding olefins (II) with synthesis gas (III) in an organic phase containing a cobalt catalyst at 50-250 degrees C and 100-400 bar, followed by hydrogenation of the aldehydes obtained, in which the catalyst is obtained by reacting an aqueous cobalt salt solution (IV) with (III) in presence of a solvent (V) which is immiscible or only slightly miscible with water, and the catalyst-containing organic phase is obtained by extraction of the catalyst from the aqueous phase with an extractant (VI) which is immiscible or only slightly miscible with water. The novelty is that (a) the formation of the catalyst, (b) its extraction into the organic phase and (c) the hydroformylation are all carried out in one stage. |
