The hand-held unit (1) has lock and unlock pushbuttons (3,4) and an LED telltale (5). Infrared emitting (9) and receiving (10) diodes are controlled via a microprocessor; two coded signals, for locking and unlocking, are typically emitted. A programmable memory is safeguarded against battery failure. The response units in furniture are similarly equipped and also battery-powered.- DETAILED DESCRIPTION - For battery economy, the response units are active only for e.g. 3 ms every 300 ms - each button-push, it is assumed, lasts at least 300 ms. Opt., photovoltaic battery charging is used. Codes received are compared with authorization codes in the memory; authentication leads to compliance, via, e.g. electromagnetic bistable actuators. This is reported by sensor to the remote unit, to light the telltale. Information stored is opt. elaborated to identify different users, or different locks, involved in previous operations
